Direct TV hires Fox Sports CEO ELLEN SHENG
The Direct TV Group Inc. Thursday named David Hill, the chairman and chief executive of Fox Sports, as head of Direct TV Entertainment, a new group that will oversee programming and technologies such as interactivity. Fox Sports is a unit of News Corp., the New York based media giant that controls Direct TV. The move is part of a larger restructuring that organizes Direct TV into
three divisions. Also as part of the restructuring, the El Segundo, Calif., company named John Suranyi, previously executive vice president of customer satisfaction, as head of the new sales and service group; and Bruce Churchill, previously chief financial officer of Direct TV Latin America, as head of Direct TV Latin America and new enterprises. Hill, Suranyi and Churchill will all report to Chase Carey, Direct TV's chief executive.
Direct TV's reorganization comes weeks after Mitchell Stern, the number two executive at Direct TV, quit abruptly. Stern oversaw day-to-day operations. In his new role, Hill will oversee programming as well as development of programming packages and marketing. He will also be responsible for integrating new technologies and for developing the company's advertising sales. In an interview, Hill said it was still too early to say what will be on his agenda but is excited about returning to the satellite TV business. He starts his new role in six months. Hill has been at Fox Sports for over 10 years and will continue to serve as chairman there. Prior to joining Fox, he was at British Sky Broadcasting, where he lead in the development, launch and expansion of the British satellite TV service.
